How do we know when its good? A language of criticism for Information Architecture (40)

Carl Collins, HUGE

When we look at some artifact of our information age, a website, a piece of software, some complex mobile social interaction - how do we critique that experience? Stepping back from it - how do we know if it is good or bad? By what criteria, by what kind of inquiry, by what analytical measure do we say - this is good information architecture? I do not believe that this language of critique for information architecture currently exists - and in order to evolve the discipline it must be established.

The presentation has two halves. For the first I will present historical examples of related disciplines' critical methods. This will lead into a description and evaluation of what makes good information architecture. In knowing what is good - we must know what to focus on and having a language to discuss ones work, helps one better understand it.

For the second half of the presentation I will apply these principles to examples from my own work. The goal here is to identify the appropriate points of critique and walk through the process of applying it to different levels of a project

I categorized this talk as Persuasion but the talk itself I will be of interest to these categories as well: Content Strategy, Visual Design & Branding, and Business Strategy.
