How To Think (And Work) Like Richard Saul Wurman (T7)
Dan Klyn, University of Michigan School of Information
Wednesday July 28, 20102:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
There's an old addage about pearls, and how the finest ones are found inside of oysters with the roughest outer shells. Over the course of 75 years and among the pages of more than 80 books, Richard Saul Wurman has grown countless pearls of wisdom about the design of information, architecture, and information architecture. And while many of us know the man's name from his invention of the TED conference, and have perhaps thumbed through a copy of Information Architects or Information Anxiety, Mr. Wurman's vast contribution and incisive perspectives on matters that are integral to the design of user experience have been largely absent from popular discourse in the UX community.
RSW's non-presence within the "standard" UX canon has been inconspicuous for many reasons, one of which being the fact that there's so much of Mr. Wurman's work to come to grips with. Dan Klyn is an information architect whose practice has been profoundly influenced by research into Mr. Wurman's vast and often-roughshelled body of work. In this 4-hour workshop, Dan will provide a career-spanning retrospective view into the life and work of Richard Saul Wurman with an eye trained specifically toward ideas, approaches and methodologies that are salient to the design of websites and other online applications. The format of the workshop will alternate between formal presentation, hands-on activity and informal Q&A to give participants a number of different opportunities to think and work in ways that are informed by the purposefully-abrasive and hedonistically-prolific man who invented information architecture.
Participants are encouraged to bring questions and problems from "the real-world" with them into the tutorial.
